Getting Back into Digital Voice Modes: DMR, D-Star, and Yaesu Fusion

Recently, I’ve been diving back into digital voice modes like DMR, D-Star, and Yaesu Fusion. These technologies remain a fantastic way to connect with other radio enthusiasts worldwide. As part of this renewed interest, I set up my own XLX server: XLX880.

Using a Raspberry Pi 5, I configured an XLXD server to power the system. The Raspberry Pi’s performance made it an ideal choice for this project, and it’s been rewarding to see everything running smoothly. The server is live and accessible at xlx880.pd5dj.nl.

To make the setup more interactive, I’ve added a ChatGPT AI chatbot to Module J of XLX880. This feature allows operators to interact with the AI for questions or general information, adding a modern and engaging element to the amateur radio experience.

I’ve also registered a Yaesu Fusion Reflector, YSF88880 (88880), which is accessible through XLX880 Module F. This provides additional connectivity options for Fusion users.

For those interested in creating their own setup, I’ve written a straightforward guide on how to install an XLX server, including optional features like an ECHO Peer service and the DMRBOT ChatGPT chatbot. The guide is available in my GitHub repository.

It’s been an enjoyable experience putting this system together, and I look forward to seeing how it evolves. If you’re working on something similar or have questions, feel free to reach out!
